During the course the texts of Pausanias and other ancient geographers will be studied in relation to myth and story-telling and the archaeological remains. The course starts in January in Utrecht. From 20 -30 March 2009 the excursion in Greece will take place.

Interacademic MA Course Greek Epigraphy

7 JUNI – 15 JUNI 2009

Inscriptions can be very useful in the study of the ancient world. They are original documents on stone or bronze originating from the same period as the events they record. They give us detailed information, which literary sources often tell very briefly or just omit. Study of inscriptions is not easy. Apart from different forms and systems of letters, it is sometimes almost impossible to assign an exact date. Just few complete inscriptions have survived. The documents are not self-evident and need interpretation.

The Netherlands Institute at Athens has decided to offer a nine-day course on Greek epigraphy for MA-students and PhD-students of all Dutch universities in the summer of 2009. It will be an introduction into Greek epigraphy and has as aim to acquire research-skills in epigraphy within different fields of MA- and PhD-research. Inscriptions will be studied from the Achaean period until Late Antiquity. The most important genres will be examined within a few topic-domains: state and politics, family and the individual, religion and ideology, city and urban life and culture. Attention will be paid to the theoretical and methodological aspects of epigraphy, and there will be worked on the application of these aspects within the framework of other approaches (literature, history, linguistics, archaeology, religious studies). Prof. dr. O. M. van Nijf (RUG) and dr. L. E. Tacoma (UL) will lecture the course. The course consists of classes, visits of sites and museums, individual research in the libraries in Athens and lectures of guest speakers. Final date of entry: December 1 2008.
