New Halos
Since 1978 Prof. R. Reinders of Groningen University is directing the excavations on the Hellenistic site of New Halos (in the vicinity of Almyros, Thessaly). The project in New Halos is cooperation with the 13th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities in Vólos. During the excavations a number of houses were found, with artifacts in situ. The researchers also located three towers and parts of the city-walls. Read more

Theissoa-Lavda
From 1985 until 1989 Professor G.J. te Riele, then director of the NIA, directed field research at the Hellenistic site of Lavda, near Theissoa in Arcadia in cooperation with the 7th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities in Ancient Olympia. The project combined architectural survey with excavations. The results have been published in the NIA’s periodical Pharos. The architectural research is still continuing. Read more

Middle Helladic Argolid (2000 - 1500 BC)
Since 2003 fieldwork, directed by S. Voutsaki from Groningen University, is conducted on the Middle Helladic Argolid in cooperation with the 4th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities in Nafplion. Its aim is to interpret the important social, political and cultural changes that took place in the southern Greek mainland during the Middle Helladic period and the transition to the Late Helladic (approx. 2000-1500BC). Geraki
The fieldwork in Geraki near Sparta started in 1995 and is directed by Professor J. Crouwel of the University of Amsterdam in cooperation with the 5th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities in Sparta. The on-site urban survey, which was conducted until 1999, has brought to light finds from the Early Bronze Age up till the Roman period. The ongoing excavations in field 17, conducted since 1999, concentrate on settlement remains of the Early Bronze Age (ca. 3000-2000) and on the Hellenistic domestic habitation of the site. Read More

Nikopolis
In 2004 and 2005 fieldwork was carried out at the Nicopolis archaeological site and the Preveza peninsula. A team from the VU University Amsterdam and Wageningen University led by Professor H. Kars, in cooperation with the 12th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities in Ioannina, carries out botanical and geoarchaeological research. The aim of the research is to arrive at a plan for reconstruction of the vegetation at the site in a way that is beneficial to the monuments. Read more

Tanagra
Since 2000, Professor John Bintliff of the Leiden University is carrying out a research project at the site of Tanagra in Boiotia in cooperation with prof. B. Slapšak from the Ljubljana University and the 9th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities in Thebes. Within the fortification walls, a pick-up survey, as well as an architectural survey and geophysical research have been conducted. These have revealed clear evidence for the intensity of various settlement periods in the history of the city. The archaeological survey outside the city walls shows the diachronic relationships between the town and its surrounding rural areas. Read more

Zakynthos
Since 2005 a systematic survey is carried out on the island of Zakynthos, directed by Gert Jan van Wijngaarden (University of Amsterdam) and Andreas Sotiriou (35th Ephorate for Prehistoric and Classcial Antiquities). The aims of the project are to understand the archaeological remains on the island and to reconstruct the dynamics of the landscape. Read more

Aetolia
From 1981 unt
il 1989 Bastiaan Bommeljé and Peter Doorn from Utrecht and Leiden Universities respectively, directed a survey project which was led in coopration with the 6th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities in Patras, the 10th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities in Delphoi and the 14th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities in Lamia. Research area was the mountainous region of ancient Aetolia in northwestern Greece. The survey consisted of site mapping; find collecting and interviewing local inhabitants. The data of this survey are still being studied and are gradually being published.
