Nikopolis

The aim of the preliminary studies is to assess the suitability of the region surrounding the archaeological monument of Nicopolis for botanical and paleobotanical research in order to contribute to a scientifically and ecologically sound management plan for the archaeological area, including a scheme for vegetation management on and around the standing monument. The ancient vegetation and the current possible vegetation should be the basis of such a plan.

The first season showed that the soil cores give sufficient information for a reconstruction of the vegetational development, A thorough description of the actual vegetation composition and related soil conditions indicate the requirements to manage vegetation at the site, for example experiments with grazing and mowing. The botanical value and influence of typical plant species of wall crevices on ancient walls is studied, as well as a research of the possibilities of agricultural reform into more extensive agriculture and alternative crops.
